Our Commitment to Sustainability
The National Housing Trust is dedicated to sustainable development that reduces energy use and creates a healthier living environment for families and children.
By greening housing as we preserve its affordability and reducing energy demand, we reduce the energy bill of low income consumers, enabling them to spend scarce money for other necessities and preserving their fragile credit. We also reduce environmental health threats that can lead to illnesses such as asthma that often plague low income families.
The National Housing Trust’s commitment to sustainable development is present throughout our work:
As Advocate...

|
Through our Green Preservation Policy Program, the Trust has substantially elevated the visibility of the emerging and overlapping fields of housing preservation and green building. The Trust regularly engages with federal, state, and local policy leaders to help them incorporate appropriate green incentives into their housing programs. |

As Developer...
|
|
The Trust has renovated almost 5,000 affordable apartments and now incorporates green building technologies in all of its development. Galen Terrace was the first rehabilitated property in D.C. to meet all of the green criteria under the Enterprise Green Communities Initiative. The Trust employs a Green Construction Manager to oversee green development at all of our properties. |

As Lender...

The Trust manages a Green Affordable Housing Preservation Loan Fund, providing predevelopment loans to those who incorporate green standards and technologies in their rehabilitation of existing housing. |
